New York, Idlib … News Time
On the eve of the 10th anniversary of the civil war, UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen has called on the Syrian people to address issues such as injustice, poverty, death and violations of fundamental rights. It has failed miserably in solving the problems of the people. Addressing a meeting of the Security Council, he said that in order to make progress in resolving the Syrian crisis, key parties, both internally and externally, would have to show flexibility in their positions. He added that Syrians were watching five armies fighting on their soil at the same time. These include forces from Turkey, Russia and Iran, as well as ISIS fighters. A UN official has warned of deteriorating living conditions in Syria and growing poverty and misery. Geir Pedersen said the effects of the crisis the Syrian people are going through will be felt for generations to come. On the other hand, anti-government demonstrations were held in Syria on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the people’s movement against dictatorship. In the opposition-controlled northwestern province of Idlib, people raised revolutionary flags and chanted pro-democracy slogans.
