Washington … News Time

The Pentagon says the administration intends to close the Guantanamo Bay prison. A Pentagon spokesman said there were now only 46 detainees in the prison, according to the Associated Press. Guantanamo Bay used to have 800 detainees, but now 14 detainees are on trial, while 2 have been convicted. The spokesman said the transfer and sentencing of the remaining inmates were being reviewed. Earlier, human rights group Amnesty International demanded that US President Biden fulfill his promise to close Guantanamo Bay. According to news agencies, US President Joe Biden had made it clear during his election campaign that he would close the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention center built after 9/11, but US lawmakers are opposed to this decision. Amnesty International has called on US President Joe Biden to keep his promise to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center. The controversial prison, set up after the September 11, 2001 attacks, was intended to detain and interrogate suspected foreign terrorists during the war on terror. However, critics of the controversial detention center described the methods used as “inhumane” torture.

Daphne Eviatar, security director at Amnesty International’s US Human Rights Program, said in a statement that as long as the prison remained in place, America’s global reputation for human rights would continue to be affected. Since January 2002, 780 people have been detained there. Most of them have not been charged. There are still 39 detainees in the detention center, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks. Khalid Sheikh Mohammad and 4 others are to be tried in a criminal court, but even after 20 years, the case has not been started yet. There are also 10 Guantanamo Bay detainees to be released. Under current law, the US government cannot transfer detainees from Guantanamo Bay to the United States.
