The United States has accused Russia of obstructing legal action against Syrian officials involved in chemical weapons attacks on unarmed civilians in Syria. During a video conference at the UN Security Council, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield accused Moscow of trying to hold Russia accountable for its use of chemical weapons. “We all know that the regime of Bashar al-Assad has repeatedly used chemical weapons,” said Linda Thomas-Greenfield. Why isn’t the Syrian government responsible for this? The Assad regime is responsible. He added that unfortunately the Assad government tried to avoid accountability by obstructing independent investigations and undermining the role and work of the organization working to ban the use of chemical weapons.

The U.S. diplomat added that Biden, in his first participation in Security Council meetings since taking office, said that the Syrian government’s allies, especially Russia, have tried to obstruct the accountability of Syrian officials involved in the chemical attacks. He explained that Russia was defending the Assad regime despite its chemical attacks. It attacks the professionalism of the prohibition of chemical weapons and thwarts attempts to hold the Assad government responsible for the use of chemical weapons. It is noteworthy that the United Nations also accused the regime of Bashar al-Assad of carrying out chemical weapons attacks on the sites of Eastern Ghouta and Douma in Syria. The Syrian government has not been able to answer 19 questions from UN experts about the storage and manufacture of chemical gas at military bases.
