NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg has said that the arrival of US and coalition troops for a wide range of military exercises in Eastern Europe has not served any purpose against Russia. According to the French news agency, he said that in 25 years, it would be the largest deployment of US troops in Europe, which would demonstrate NATO’s commitment to the independence and security of Europe. Jens Stoltenberg said these were defense exercises not against any particular country but they would show the potential of a major power transfer from the United States to Europe to provide customized assistance and protection to the NATO allies. He said that by the name of Defender Europe 2020, the consultants will be in Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia. All three Baltic States are members of NATO and this year is celebrating the 30th anniversary of independence from the Soviet Union, but Russia also has the full right to secure itself within its borders.

During the exercises May 9th marks the 75th anniversary of the Russian victory against Nazi Germany in Moscow, a NATO official said. Jens Stoltenberg says the US has already informed Russia and members of the European Security and Cooperation Organization (OSCE) in this regard. About 37,000 troops from 18 countries will participate in these US-administered exercises. The exercises are taking place in Germany, Poland and three Baltic States in May and June. In this regard, 20,000 US troops will move to Europe in the coming two months.

According to a NATO official, the exercises will continue from February to June. The exercises begin amid doubts whether the United States is still ready to defend Europe. It should be noted that US President Donald Trump initially termed it an obsolete alliance, expressing uncertainty about NATO’s future. However, Germany and other European countries have reaffirmed their commitment to the alliance on defense spending. Since Russia’s accession to the peninsula by Russia in 2014, NATO has built a capacity for rapid deployment of the military, significantly strengthening its presence in Eastern Europe.
