Juba, New York … News Time

Floods in South Sudan have displaced one million people. According to news agencies, the Jonglei state’s floodwaters flooded residential areas, raising fears of destruction of crops. The floods have begun to spread malaria and diarrhea among children, while the risk of famine has also increased.

On the other hand, the United Nations ended its operation in the troubled Darfur region of Sudan after 13 years. The UN statement said that following a resolution passed by the World Security Council on December 22, the peacekeeping mission was terminated and the responsibility for protecting civilians was transferred to the Sudanese government. The peace and security situation in Darfur is still tense, with human rights activists sharply criticizing the UN body’s decision.
