Facebook, the world’s largest social media site, is facing 3.2 billion in damages for exploiting the personal details of 44 million people using its monopoly in the London market. According to a report by the British news agency Reuters, Facebook is now also known as Meta platforms. Liza Lovdahl Gormsen, a senior adviser to the FCA, the UK’s financial management authority, said the lawsuit was filed by British users of social media platforms between 2015 and 2019. The trial is set to begin on Friday in the Royal Courts of Justice, located in central London. Prosecutors have accused Facebook of making billions of dollars by forcing users to access its personal data. Facebook says people use its services because they value them and because people have the right to share information on Meta platforms.

The latest lawsuit comes just days after Facebook failed to clear a no-confidence motion filed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC’s lawsuit against Facebook is one of several cases filed by the US federal government in the wake of decades of over-reliance on major technology companies in the market. In the 17 years since its inception, Facebook has become the only social network in the UK where you can keep in touch with friends and family in one place, says Liza Lovdahl Gormsen. There was also a dark side to Facebook. It misused its monopoly on the market to impose unfair conditions on ordinary British citizens and used their data to its advantage. Liza Lovdahl Gormsen also accused Facebook of collecting data inside its platform through pixel-like mechanisms, allowing users to use the Internet through “all-in-one images”.
