The leader of Ethiopia’s northern Tigray Region has said his forces bombed an airport in the neighboring Eritrean capital. Fighting in northern Ethiopia between federal government troops and Tigray Region forces has spread across the international border, according to foreign news agency AFP. Tigre president Debretsion Gebremichael did not say how many missiles were fired at Asmara on Saturday, but said it was the only Eritrean city to be targeted. He said his forces had been fighting Eritrean forces on several fronts for the past few days. Debretsion Gebremichael did not elaborate, but said that Eritrean troops had been deployed and were fighting on the Ethiopian border. He said his troops were fighting Ethiopian troops as well as the 16th Division of the Eritrean Army. Possibly when asked about targeting the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, he replied, “I don’t want to tell you, but the missiles were long-range.”

Eritrean officials, on the other hand, declined to comment. The Ethiopian government has not commented on the Eritrean attacks. Authorities in Ethiopia say thousands of Ethiopians have fled to neighboring Sudan to escape violent attacks in the northern Tigray Region. Alsir Khaled, head of the Sudanese refugee agency in the eastern border town of Kassala, said several Ethiopian soldiers were among those crossing the border. It should be noted that there was a long-running feud between the government and the local administration of Tigray Region and clashes started last week. Dozens of people were killed in the airstrikes, while fears were being expressed that the fighting could lead to civil war in the country and could affect neighboring countries.
