Martin Griffiths, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Yemen, has strongly condemned the horrific attack on Aden Airport, calling it a deliberate attempt to turn the formation of a new Yemeni government into unrest and despair. He said the attack on Aden Airport was an open war crime. Speaking by telephone with Yemeni Foreign Minister Ahmed bin Mubarak on Thursday evening, Mr Griffiths said he condemned the cowardly attack on members of the Yemeni government upon arrival at Aden airport. Dozens of civilians were killed and injured in the attack. “This is a cowardly act and a war crime,” he said.

In a press statement issued from his office, the UN envoy offered his condolences to the families of those killed in the Aden attack and wished the injured a speedy recovery. “Yesterday was a very sad day for Yemen,” he added. Targeting civilians and civilian installations is a serious violation of international humanitarian law. This is a reprehensible and horrific attack on Aden as well as the entire country. Attacks on civilians at the airport could be a war crime, he said.
