After the final results of the presidential election in Afghanistan, the situation of the political crisis in the country has grown. Competing against the nominee President Ashraf Ghani, both of his presidential rivals refused to accept the election results. Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai said, “I have already expressed my concerns to the people.” In the present scenario, it is impossible to have a transparent and impartial presidential election which will result in a crisis and affect the peace process. “I also called for the unity of all social and political forces to work together to achieve peace and consider this as the most important issue,” he added. Hamid Karzai said that the process that was imposed on our people in the name of elections was a non-national action. And it was the hypocrisy of democratic principles and values that reflected a lower turnout than expected.

Abdullah Abdullah, the failed presidential candidate and Ashraf Ghani’s political rival, announced unilateral success after announcing the results. He claimed victory and said he would announce a comprehensive government soon. On the other hand, the other presidential candidate, Rahmatullah Nabil, declared the results a ‘fraud’ and the death of such democracy. Rahmatullah Nabil said that the government resulting from fraud is unacceptable. He called for a reconciliation government. Rahmatullah Nabil said that Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani should leave their positions in the context of the current situation. He said both Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani would be out of their power in view of the current situation. “The elections should be dissolved and the Taliban should come and announce a ceasefire nationwide,” he said. So that we can move towards a government of reconciliation where there is no personal and individual interest. In addition, the United Nations Mission on Afghanistan (UNAMA) said on the results of the presidential election that UNAMA provided possible assistance to Afghan election officials. UNAMA said in its statement that the electoral laws were “neutral,” and that all possible measures were taken to combat fraud. The statement said that the UN will continue to provide unbiased and expert opinion to the people of Afghanistan, institutions, including all political parties.

It should be noted that the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan on February 18 released the final result of the presidential election held in September last year. And officially announced the success of Ashraf Ghani, with which he is elected President of Afghanistan for the second time. The Afghan Election Commission announced that Ashraf Ghani received 9,233,592 votes, or 50.64%, in the September 28 election last year. His rival and chief executive, Abdullah Abdullah, received 7.25 thousand 841 votes, or 39.52 percent.

It should be noted that due to technical issues and allegations of fraud in the ballot count, the results were delayed for a long time. War-torn Afghanistan is a populous country with a population of 30 million, where 96 million citizens are registered as voters. As many as 4,900 polling stations were set up across the country. Hawa Alam Nuristani, the head of the Election Commission, said that out of the 96 million voters, only 18 million used to vote. Voter’s turnout was low due to fear of Taliban attacks. However, in the 2014 elections, about 50% of the people used voting. Earlier, both Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah claimed victory in the 2014 elections and then a joint government was formed under US pressure after which Ashraf Ghani became president and Abdullah Abdullah became chief executive. Remember that Ashraf Ghani’s victory in the presidential election was announced on one occasion when the signing of a peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban is expected in the next few days this would result in the withdrawal of US forces from the country.
