US President Donald Trump pushed everyone, including himself, into a closed street. The way they were going to deal with the Taliban even if it happened that way, there was trouble and now when the talks are over, there is still trouble. The fact is that US and Taliban talks in Qatar were wrongly named peace talks. These were not peace talks but only US and Taliban talks. Peace can only come when Afghans also end the war and agree on a shared political system. Before 9/11, if there were no US or other country forces in Afghanistan, was there peace? After the Soviet withdrawal, the wars of the Najib regime and the mujahideen were fought. And then the destruction that took place in the wars of the Taliban and Mujahideen, in contrast, it was the disaster that took place during the occupation of the Soviet forces. Thus the withdrawal of US forces without inter-Afghan reconciliation does not necessarily lead to peace, but to further destruction.
Americans’ thoughts on Afghanistan had come to a halt in the era of Barack Obama and Richard Holbrooke was appointed special envoy to seek a political solution. Even then, the Taliban agreed to direct talks with the United States in Qatar but when the then Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, protested so Barack Obama also refused to continue the talks with the Taliban without the Afghan government. Now, the Donald Trump administration’s first mistake was that they agreed to negotiate with the Taliban despite protests by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. He and his special envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad, believed that when he and the Taliban negotiations reached a certain stage. So the Taliban will also create flexibility for the Afghan government and will be included in the second phase but when the United States started negotiations without the Afghan government so the morale of the Afghan government fell from the sky to the ground while the morale of the Taliban went from the earth to the sky.
As the talks progressed, the Taliban’s attitude toward the Afghan government became more and more uncomfortable. Likewise, US negotiators were happy that the Taliban would agree to a ceasefire by approaching the deal. But as that time approached, the Taliban intensified the war. This sent a message to the Afghan government and other Afghan leaders in the political system that the deal was a political death of them all. So when Zalmay went to Kabul with the final draft of the Khalilzad deal, he faced an upset Ashraf Ghani. Zalmay Khalilzad promises Taliban to release more than 5,000 prisoners but he didn’t think the prisoners were in the Afghan government’s jails, so Ashraf Ghani told Zalmay Khalilzad to tell Donald Trump. To release the Taliban prisoners (if they have one). The Taliban are killing my people daily. I have no contract with them. I could cut my fingers but not sign the Taliban release decree thus, the failure of the deal was the first reason the Afghan president refused.
The Afghan constitution was supposed to have presidential elections in early 2019, but because the US negotiating team knew that an interim government would be formed in the event of reconciliation with the Taliban. Therefore, elections were postponed from Ashraf Ghani. Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai and several other Afghan leaders were also in favor of postponing the elections in the wake of talks. And when they realized that the Taliban was going to be compromised without them so instead of taking more time with the Supreme Court, he intended to hold the September 28 presidential election. He is running his own campaign, while Abdullah Abdullah, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and other candidates have also started their campaign. And this time, when asked by the US team to postpone the election, Ashraf Ghani refused.
The real drawback was that President Donald Trump’s talks did not target peace in Afghanistan. But began with the goal of honorable withdrawal from their forces. First Donald Trump, Khalilzad and allies say that the State of the Union should be concluded before addressing then they put on the September deadline because this so-called victory was to be used for America’s next presidential election. As the Taliban and other parties understood this weakness of US negotiators, so they used it to persuade Zalmay Khalilzad to come to terms with it. This was not acceptable to the US Government as well as the US Establishment. Establishment or National Security Advisor Could Not Stop Donald Trump Initially but when the terms of the deal came to light, resistance from these elements began to grow and I think one of the reasons for Donald Trump’s return was internal resistance.
As Zalmay Khalilzad and his president Donald Trump realized without the ceasefire, the Afghan government will never accept the Taliban and their agreement, therefore, the negotiating team continued to call on the Taliban to make a ceasefire and make the deal somewhat environmentally friendly. As a result, Donald Trump plans to call him and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani at Camp David but when the matter came to Mullah Hibbatullah and the Taliban Shura, they opposed going to Camp David before signing the deal. Then when Zalmay Khalilzad reached the message that the Taliban was not ready to come to Camp David so Anna Donald Trump’s Anna was outraged, and based on the Taliban’s attack in Kabul, he fired that tweet. In which he announced the end of talks with the Taliban.
