The United States has said on Wednesday that it is preparing to appoint an ambassador to Sudan after 23 years. The announcement comes from the United States at a time when Sudan’s new Prime Minister, Abdalla Hamdok, is visiting Washington. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said after meeting with Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok that Sudan and the United States are moving towards restoring diplomatic relations with each other after 23 years. On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the United States and Sudan have agreed to renew their diplomatic relations for the first time in more than two decades by exchanging diplomats.

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok meets with administration officials during his visit to the United States these include Finance Minister Steven Mnuchin and Mark Green, head of the US Agency for International Development. Pompeo said in a statement that the decision was an important step in strengthening US-Sudanese bilateral relations. As Sudan moves toward a democratic process under civilian leadership, the constitution is drafted and reforms are underway. The visit of Sudanese Minister Abdalla Hamdok to the United States aims to gain Washington’s support. Relations between former deposed president Omar al-Bashir and the United States have been strained. The Sudanese Prime Minister has called on the United States to end its economic sanctions on Khartoum from year to year. The United States has also indicated that it will gradually remove sanctions on Sudan.

 US administration officials say Sudan is moving in a positive way to get out of the list of countries backing terrorism, but it has not yet met all the conditions. The US has not appointed any ambassador to Sudan since 1995, fearing terrorist attacks.
