Democratic chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Bennie Thompson, dismissed Kevin McAleenan’s resignation, saying that Trump should immediately replace him. He said the removal of the acting secretary-general shows that President Trump continues to abdicate the leadership of the Homeland Security Department. The US president said this would only increase the chaos in a department where there are many vacancies and there are unconfirmed acting office-bearers.
