US President Donald Trump announces resignation of US acting Homeland Security chief Kevin McAleenan French news agency AFP reports that Kevin McAleenan has joined the list of top US officials to resign. US President Donald Trump said in a tweet on social networking site Twitter that Kevin McAleenan served as Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, we have worked together to reduce border crossings.

The US president added in his tweet that Kevin McAleenan wants to spend more time with his family and move to the private sector after many years of work in government, congratulating Kevin McAleenan on providing excellent services. Kevin McAleenan is expected to serve six months in the office of Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, prior to this, Kirstjen Nielsen had been in the office for a year and a half. Donald Trump said he will announce the name of the new Homeland Security Secretary next week, adding that there are several candidates here.

During the short tenure of Kevin McAleenan, the Trump administration accelerated efforts to reduce the number of refugees coming from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, tell Mexico to interrupt their route and apply for asylum in the country where they first entered. It should be noted that the main target of Trump’s agenda is crackdown on illegal immigration and he has put a lot of effort in this regard. According to data released this week, US border agents have arrested or detained close to one million illegal refugees from Mexico’s border with Mexico in the past year, the highest number in a decade. The number of refugees arrested on the border in May this year was one lakh 44 thousand, down from 52,000 in September.

 Great performance:

Before resigning, Kevin McAleenan told the Washington Post that he did not feel in control of his department. According to media reports, he was discouraged by the Trump administration. Kevin McAleenan told The Washington Post that I could no longer control my department’s tone, message, public fees and access to it during a rapidly changing time. He said that being a senior, accountable personality is not right. In a tweet yesterday, he thanked the US president and pointed out the successes of his department.

Kevin McAleenan said in his tweet that in the past 6 months, with the help of Donald Trump, we’ve done tremendous work to reduce the humanitarian crisis and border security issues we faced last year, reduced crossing illegal borders, established partnerships with governments in the region and deployed additional border security to address human trafficking and refugee causes. Democratic chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Bennie Thompson, dismissed Kevin McAleenan’s resignation, saying that Trump should immediately replace him. He said the removal of the acting secretary-general shows that President Trump continues to abdicate the leadership of the Homeland Security Department. The US president said this would only increase the chaos in a department where there are many vacancies and there are unconfirmed acting office-bearers.
