UN committee passes on North Korea’s human rights resolution

New York … News Time

The UN General Assembly has passed a resolution expressing international concern over North Korea’s human rights abuses and urging it to address the issue of abductions of foreign nationals. The resolution, introduced by Japan, the European Union, the United States and others, received overwhelming support in a vote in the General Assembly, while a handful of nations, including China and North Korea, opposed it. Such a resolution has been passed for 16 consecutive years. The resolution strongly condemns the long-running systematic and widespread human rights abuses in and around North Korea. It urges North Korea to drop all allegations of enforced disappearances. Provide accurate and detailed information to the families of the victims about their missing relatives and resolve all issues related to the abductees as soon as possible. The resolution calls for the immediate return of all hostages, especially those from Japan and South Korea. North Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations, Kim Song, has criticized the resolution, calling it a political conspiracy and saying it has nothing to do with the promotion and protection of human rights.
