Beijing has further strained relations with Washington after the United States imposed global sanctions on a number of Chinese companies. According to foreign news agency Reuters, Beijing’s top diplomat and Foreign Minister Wang Yi has said that China’s relations with the United States have become more difficult and will return to the right path only after a period of unprecedented difficulty. In its latest move, the United States has blacklisted dozens of Chinese companies, which Washington says have ties to the military. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a joint interview with state media and other agencies that recent US policies on China have harmed the interests of both countries and poses a great threat to the world. “But there is still an opportunity for both sides to start a new round of talks with new hope,” he said.

US President-elect Joe Biden had hoped for better relations between Washington and Beijing after four years of escalating tensions under the Donald Trump administration. Last month, the Chinese foreign minister said he hoped that after Joe Biden’s election, relations between Washington and China would be positive and the journey towards purpose and rationality would begin. However, Biden criticized China’s approach to trade and other issues. The Chinese foreign minister, without naming Donald Trump or Joe Biden, urged the United States to respect China’s chosen “social order and path to development.” He added that if Washington was serious, disputes between the two sides could be resolved. “We know that some people in the United States are worried about China’s rapid development, but the most sustainable leadership is to move forward rather than stop other countries from developing,” he added.

Relations between the United States and China have deteriorated over the past year on a number of issues, including trade, technology, the corona virus and China’s claim to the South China Sea, and the enforcement of security laws in Hong Kong. In July 2020, the United States ordered China to close its consulate in Houston for three days to protect intellectual property and information. The United States has said in a statement that a Chinese scientist who had been involved in visa fraud and had secret ties to the military had sought refuge at the Chinese consulate in San Francisco. In response, Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin accused the Trump administration of restricting the movement of Chinese scholars in the country, using them as an excuse to harass or take action against them.
