For 150 years, Britain had close ties with the Gulf States, and agreements were reached during the 19th century, using the term “truce status”, but on December 1, 1971, these agreements were annulled. Under the leadership of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, the truce status became the United Arab Emirates, but even after that there was a strong relationship between Britain and the Gulf states.

When Queen Elizabeth visited the UAE in 1979, she was accompanied by Prince Philip. 31 years later, in 2010, the royal couple visited Abu Dhabi. On this occasion, they also visited the mausoleum of Sheikh Zayed and the Jama Masjid. He was accompanied by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
