News Time

This was on November 13, 1970, when a young Syrian Air Force officer took control of the government in a peaceful military coup in the coastal mountains. This was considered another military intervention in the series of military coups since Syria’s independence, and no one believed that the government formed by this military coup would complete five decades.

Assad family:

The Arab country has been ruled by Hafez al-Assad’s family for 50 consecutive years. Al-Assad was born on October 6, 1930. He was president of the country from 1971 to 2000. During all this time he was also the Secretary General of the National Command of the ruling Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party. In a way, this position also belongs to the head of the party and the government. The Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party is still Syria’s ruling party. In the days of Hafez al-Assad, Syrian workers were forced to call them “holy.” During his rule, members of the Alawite sect were specially deployed in security and intelligence agencies. After his departure, Abdul Haleem Khudaim became the interim president, but the party soon appointed Hafiz al-Assad’s son, Bashar al-Assad, as head of state. He too has been in power for the last 20 years.

Ten years of civil war:

More than 500,000 people have been killed in Syria’s civil war against the Assad family over the past decade. Economically, the country is in a deep recession and the economic situation is deteriorating. Almost the entire country fell into the hands of armed resistance groups from the regime of Bashar al-Assad. These groups had the financial and military support of the Arab states of the Persian Gulf. Western nations also supported him. The government has been calling the members of these armed resistance groups insurgents. Now, with the military help of Russia and Iran, the Assad regime has regained control of the devastated country. Half of Bashar al-Assad’s rule has been consumed by the civil war. Analysts say President Bashar al-Assad’s government is almost entirely dependent on allied countries such as Russia and Iran.

Government practices:

Experts say the continuation of the Assad family’s rule is due to corrupt government officials rather than socialism. This form of government is called Kleptocracy. Analysts overseeing the affairs of the Arab world say that for 50 years the system of government has been oppressive, with no room for compromise and barbarism. These experts also say that the Assad family, like the Castro family of Cuba and the Kim family of North Korea, is continuing its government by asserting its right to power in the country.

Half a century of government:

There are no signs yet that the Assad family plans to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Neilquliam, a researcher from the Middle East and North Africa division of the Royal Chatham House, a reputable think tank based in the British capital, says the family ruled the country ruthlessly and cruelly, leaving the country a failed, wounded and lost nation brought to the floor. In 1982, Hafez al-Assad cracked down on the Muslim Brotherhood in Hama, killing thousands. The Syrian Human Rights Council puts the death toll at about 40,000. The death toll in the civil war that began under Bashar al-Assad is in the millions. In this context, the Assad family is said to be pursuing a policy of “no compromise” at home. The former US president had several meetings with Hafez al-Assad. In her memoirs, Clinton called the late Syrian president ruthless. Bashar al-Assad returned from the UK with a medical education. Critics say he introduced reform programs after taking office, but then he followed in his father’s footsteps.
