The Lahore High Court has reserved the verdict after completing arguments on bail plea in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case of PML-N vice-president Maryam Nawaz, which will be heard tomorrow (November 1st). A two-member bench of the High Court of the provincial capital, headed by Justice Ali Baqar Najfi, heard the request of Maryam Nawaz on bail. On this occasion, lawyer of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Jehanzaib Bharwana, started arguing today following the arguments of Maryam Nawaz’s lawyer. At the outset of the arguments, the NAB’s lawyer opposed Maryam Nawaz’s request for bail, saying that her request for bail on humanitarian grounds could not be executed. She said that Maryam Nawaz was allowed by the jail superintendent to meet her father, while the Supreme Court has decided that the accused’s bail can be granted in extraordinary circumstances, it does not appear that Maryam Nawaz is facing extraordinary circumstances. NAB’s counsel argued that the chairman NAB issued a warrant for the arrest of Nawaz Sharif in accordance with the law and that the case of Nawaz Nawaz was not unusual. He said that an inquiry against Maryam Nawaz was launched on February 19, 2018. In December 2018, the inquiry was turned into an inquiry. Therefore, action can be taken under the Anti-Money Laundering Act as per NAB law.

On this, Justice Ali Baqar Najfi asked whether Maryam Nawaz Sharif was also convicted in a reference, to which the lawyer replied that Nawaz Sharif was punished in a NAB reference and was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment. Islamabad High Court suspends Nawaz’s sentence responding to the lawyer, Justice Ali Baqar Najfi asked if the Supreme Court had given any guideline regarding Chaudhry Sugar Mills, to which NAB’s lawyer stated that the Supreme Court had ordered the reference to be filed after the JIT investigation, the apex court had also said in its decision that the NAB could file a sub-reference if it wanted to. To which Justice Ali Baqar Najfi said that the Supreme Court had already allowed the sub-reference to be filed in the hearing reference, not the new reference. On this, the lawyer said that as per the income tax return records, Maryam Nawaz’s assets did not match her income, Maryam Nawaz did not submit tax returns for many years while Maryam Nawaz received millions of rupees as gifts. During the hearing, the NAB filed a report of Maryam Nawaz’s STR (secret transactions) in court. He said that fake accounts were opened and loaned in the name of Chaudhry Sugar Mill. On the report submitted by the lawyer, Justice Ali Baqar Najfi said that after reviewing the report it appears that the transactions were from Nawaz Sharif’s accounts, Maryam’s link is not visible; you should know that we are hearing the case of Nawaz Sharif and not Nawaz Sharif.

On this, the lawyer said that Maryam Nawaz Chaudhry has been the CEO and shareholder of Sugar Mills. Maryam Nawaz was asked that Chaudhry Sugar owns 47% of its shares, where did they come from. The lawyer said that Maryam Nawaz could not satisfy the NAB with his reply, the warrants issued for the arrest of Nawaz Nawaz were made on 4 charges, and Nawaz Nawaz’s assets exceeded his income. He said that Maryam Nawaz sent millions of dollars abroad through money laundering, where the funds came from Maryam Nawaz to build Shamim Sugar Mill. Maryam Nawaz failed to say, and she also said that huge amount of money was transferred from the accounts of Chaudhry Sugar Mills to Shamim Sugar Mill. Continuing the talk, he said that $ 8 million was sent to Dubai by Abbas while he had no business in Dubai. Yusuf Abbas transferred the money to Chaudhry Sugar Mill. On this, Justice Ali Baqir Najafi asked what corruption was involved in the money being sent or sent, is it a crime to bring money for business in the country. The lawyer said that Maryam Nawaz played an important role in money laundering. A large amount of money was sent from Chaudhry Sugar Mills’ bank accounts to Mary Nawaz’s personal account. Later, the NAB lawyer completed the arguments, after which a two-member bench of the High Court reserved the judgment of the case, which will be heard tomorrow. It is to be noted that during the hearing yesterday, Nawaz’s lawyer Amjad Pervaiz Advocate argued that the NAB had falsely accused his client of corruption and corrupt practices while Maryam Nawaz was a woman. Must be guaranteed.

Maryam Nawaz’s request:

It may be recalled that on October 24, Nawaz filed another miscellaneous application for bail in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case, which the court had sought from the NAB. However, the NAB was unable to submit a response during the October 25 hearing, after which the court adjourned the hearing on both the petitions of Maryam Nawaz’s bail. The answer was submitted to the NAB the next day, opposing the bail plea of Maryam Nawaz. It should be noted that in the petition filed by the court, Maryam Nawaz had taken the stand that she was the daughter of the elected Prime Minister of the country three times; NAB has made a false case against them while NAB cannot take action under the Companies Act. Maryam Nawaz had requested the court to grant her bail in Chaudhry Sugar Mills case and order her release.

Ch. Sugar Mills Case:

It is pertinent to note that during the PML-N government’s rule in January 2018, the financial monitoring department had informed the NAB regarding heavy suspected transactions of Chaudhry Sugar Mills under the Money Laundering Act. Later in October 2018, during the NAB investigation, it was revealed that Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Shahbaz Sharif and his Brother Abbas Sharif’s family, as well as some foreigners from the United States and the United Kingdom. I am a partner. Sources said that billions of rupees were invested in Chaudhry Sugar Mills in the name of foreigners between 2001 and 2017 and they were given shares of millions of rupees. Then the same shares were returned to Maryam Nawaz, Hussein Nawaz and Nawaz Sharif several times without any payment. It was concluded that foreigners were used as proxies for investing heavily in the company. Because the money used by the Sharif family to invest was not legal. On July 31, she appeared before the NAB for interrogation and Chaudhry recorded her statement to the NAB team for 45 minutes in connection with the suspected transactions of Sugar Mills.

According to the report, Yusuf Abbas and Maryam Nawaz were involved in the investigation but the investor was unable to identify the foreigners and provide sources of money. And Maryam could not answer any question other than the questions sent in the notice. The NAB, on August 8, summoned Nawaz Nawaz to share details of his partnership with Chaudhry Sugar Mills, foreigners, UAE citizen Saeed Saif Bin Jabar Al-Sweidi, British citizen Sheikh Zakauddin, Saudi citizen Hani Ahmad Jamjoom and UAE citizen. Nasir Abdullah directed to provide details of financial matters related to Lootah. In addition, details of remittances / telegraphic transfers received and sent to her from overseas from Maryam Nawaz were also sought.

On August 8, the National Accountability Bureau arrested the PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz in the Chaudhri Sugar Mills case and moved it to the NAB headquarters. His physical remand was subsequently extended several times, after which the court handed him over to the NAB on September 14 for a further 14-day remand. He was re-presented to the court on September 18, where the court extended physical remand for seven days and ordered him to appear on September 25.
