The body of Dr. Tetsu Nakamura, a shot dead aid worker in Afghanistan, has been flown by plane to his hometown of Fukuoka in Kyūshū on Monday morning. When Dr. Tetsu Nakamura’s coffin wrapped in white cloth was dropped off, there were dozens of people, including Afghan nationals from southern Japan, at the airport. They carried pictures of Dr. Tetsu Nakamura, national flags and banners from Japan and Afghanistan. One Afghan citizen said she could not express her grief in words because many Afghan citizens, including Afghan children, were saved because of Dr. Tetsu Nakamura’s services. He added that he believes that Dr. Tetsu Nakamura will inspire Afghans from the heavens by seeing them work for their homeland. The Japanese police will investigate the death of Japan under criminal penalties applicable to crimes committed outside Japan. His last rites will be performed in Fukuoka on Wednesday.

On the other hand, according to the Afghan Interior Ministry, rescue workers are questioning two men suspected of shooting and killing Japanese doctor Tetsu Nakamura. The ministry has told NHK that both men may have some information about the incident. Dr. Tetsu Nakamura and his staff were shot dead in Jalalabad in the eastern province of Nangarhar on Wednesday. They were traveling in two cars with their staff. The attack also killed five other people. Dr. Tetsu Nakamura was a local representative of the Japanese NGO, Peshawar Kai. Investigators learned that an armed group sitting in the vicinity of Dr. Tetsu Nakamura stopped his car and fired. Security cameras can be seen in the footage of the suspected armed men aboard two white vehicles. Dr. Tetsu Nakamura has been working for decades to improve the living conditions of ordinary people by building irrigation systems in Afghanistan and working in other fields. Afghan officials and local citizens praised their services.
