A severe test of American democracy

Four years ago, Trump was a stranger to American politics and it was unthinkable that he would win the presidential election. Hillary Clinton’s victory was assured due to her involvement in influential circles of American politics. That is why no one took Trump seriously and allowed him to run without the traditional scrutiny of the presidential candidates. Donald Trump expressed the sentiments of white Americans, known as the Red Neck of America. The majority of this class is factory workers and the Republican Party has been popular among them. Due to the high cost of wages, many American industries moved to other countries. Foreign immigrants came to the United States to work for lower wages than the local white population, and millions of whites became unemployed. Instead of looking at the country’s deteriorating infrastructure and industry innovation, the United States has generously supported welfare projects in developing countries. The United States continued to ignore the impoverished population in its major cities. The Democratic Party had the most support in these civic and labor circles. These Americans, who had secure jobs for generations, lost their jobs. It was the skilled and working class who only worked the rest of the week and gathered in church on Sundays and spent time together, living in the same circle.

A limited but influential segment of the American population has been racist since the Civil War a century and a half ago. Unemployment and extremism fanned the flames of racism. This class began to feel that their way of life was in danger and their biggest fear was that the non-white population would overwhelm them; Trump put his hand on this aching vein. It was too late for the Democratic Party and the American establishment to realize this. Trump has kept his promises since taking office revised every agreement in the interests of the United States. On top of that, Trump brought many American industries back to the country and forced them to work in the United States. Trump imposed heavy taxes on China and Europe to improve the US trade balance and paid a larger share of NATO’s budget than other NATO members. The creation of jobs and huge tax breaks have improved the lives of millions of Americans, given jobs to the poor and made the rich richer.

Trump has promised to end the war in Afghanistan and withdraw troops from Iraq and Syria. NATO also agreed to withdraw from these war-torn areas. The capital needed for America’s economic growth was being spent relentlessly in these wars. This time around, anti-Trump elements rallied and vowed not to run for re-election. The election campaign had just begun when the United States was hit by a plague. Biden was one of several Democrat candidates, but changing circumstances made him a better candidate. Bernie Sanders clashed with Joe Biden for the common goal of defeating Trump. Trump has also denied blaming Russia for a recent major hacking attack on US institutions. Russian President Putin has taken the Fifth Generation War to a new level and why shouldn’t any leader do it in his national interest. Putin seems to have something about Trump that makes him afraid of Russia. That’s why Trump’s four-year success has faded.

By March 2020, Trump had guessed the election results. In May of this year, as his defeat seemed certain, Trump began a whirlwind of postal voting fraud. Opposition to Trump in the US media was sure to give Democrats an edge over election reports and polls. Following the Democrats ‘lead in the US House of Representatives, the Republicans’ lead in the Senate now depends on the January 6 election for the Senate seat in Georgia. The numerical situation in the Senate is 50-50 and the weight of the ruling party becomes heavier with the vote of the Vice President. Trump’s recent visit to Georgia could be a death knell for his party’s candidates. Many times in this turmoil, it was felt that America’s democratic system was in danger. But the system remained safe despite pressure from the Supreme Court to reject Trump’s election objections and the acceptance of the election results by a majority of Republican senators and members of the House of Representatives. Biden still had a 7 million vote lead over Trump.

Despite a flurry of rumors from Trump’s close aide Rudy Giuliani and his team, and contacts with Trump’s swing state representatives, no elected representative has gone berserk. When the recently pardoned lieutenant general Michael Flynn was granted a presidential pardon, many concerns were raised, as well as rumors of martial law being used to overturn the election results. Pakistan should thank God that Flynn has been Trump’s national security adviser for a few days because he is the suspect who was a staunch supporter of the bombing of Pakistan before taking office.

However, Trump’s chief of staff and senior legal advisers rejected the proposal. The Pentagon has reportedly been deeply concerned about Trump’s conduct, and the consultation on martial law in particular has raised serious questions. At the time of enlistment in the US Army, the President takes an oath of allegiance to each individual. However, Article 90 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice states that military personnel must obey the orders of their superiors. But can a soldier also refuse to obey the law against his senior officer, Secretary of Defense or the President? In such cases, the soldier must abide by the legal and moral limits set out in the constitution and refuse to obey any law. Despite provocations from Trump loyalists and friends, the system proved to be strong. The three Supreme Court judges appointed by Trump played a key role in maintaining democracy. Democracy became stronger rather than weaker after the turmoil of the US election.
