Pakistan has proposed Japan to launch negotiations with an independent trade agreement to increase bilateral trade activities. Sources said that the bilateral trade activities between Pakistan and Japan are far less than their actual potential during the past few years. The main reason for which India, Bangladesh and ASEAN member states have access to Japanese markets freely. To increase bilateral trade from real capacity and bring other countries equal to the region Pakistan has emphasized the need for talks with Japan for the preliminary trade agreement. After the preliminary agreement, negotiations on an independent trade agreement will be started.

Sources said Pakistan has prepared Terms of Reference for the Early Harvest Program regarding FTA progress. The Japanese Government has been provided and a regular study will be initiated in the case of Japan’s consensus. The recommendations prepared by Japan will be discussed in the first meeting of the new Joint Trade Commission between the two countries. According to sources, Pakistan has informed Pakistan that recommendations made by Pakistan regarding FTA are being reviewed. And suggestions in this regard will be presented in the next meeting of the Joint Trade Commission.
