Japan’s Olympic Minister Seiko Hashimoto has been officially elected the next president of the Tokyo Olympics Organizing Committee. He replaces Yoshiro Mori. Seiko Hashimoto, 56, competed in four winter games of speed skating and three summer games of cycling before deciding to focus on politics. The selection panel held a series of closed-door meetings to decide how to lead the organizers in the final months of preparations. Seiko Hashimoto will have the responsibility to get the organizers out of the international controversy created by his predecessor, Yoshiro Mori. Yoshiro Mori offered to resign last week. Earlier, he had made a statement on gender discrimination, which drew a strong international response.
