Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Lithuanian counterpart Saulius Skvernelis have agreed to cooperate in responding to missile and nuclear threats from North Korea. Abe arrived in Lithuania on Saturday on the 3rd leg of his tour of 3 Baltic nations. In a meeting with Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, Abe warned that North Korea has test-fired ballistic missiles that can reach the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius. He described it as a threat to all of Europe. Skvernelis said that Lithuania wants to develop strategic ties with Japan built on historical bilateral relations.

The 2 leaders agreed to work together to increase pressure on the North. They will also promote cooperation between Japan and Lithuania in such fields as economy, science and technology, and healthcare. At a joint news conference, Abe stressed that peace and prosperity should be founded on respecting basic values such as freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law and keeping the world free and open.

Abe said he had meaningful discussions with the Lithuanian leader on imposing more pressure on North Korea and the abduction of Japanese nationals by the North. Skvernelis expressed full support for Japan’s stance toward Pyongyang. He said nuclear development should be pursued by observing international promises and any activities that could raise tensions or threaten peace and security in the region should be avoided.
