New Delhi … News Time

India has expressed outrage over Saudi Arabia’s portrayal of Kashmir as a separate (independent) state in the Rial issued exclusively on the sidelines of the G20 summit. Saudi Arabia will host the G20 summit in November and has issued a special 20 riyal currency note on the occasion. India is also a member of the G20. According to foreign news agency AFP, the Indian Foreign Ministry has expressed its reservations to Riyadh over the presentation of Kashmir as a separate state on a special note of 20 riyals. The Foreign Ministry said Saudi officials had been asked to take corrective action. Anurag Srivastava, a spokesman for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, said: “We have pointed out a flaw in Saudi Arabia’s official and legal note regarding India’s external territorial boundaries.”I will reiterate that the occupied Jammu and Kashmir and the central region of Ladakh are integral parts of India,” he added. On the other hand, Saudi officials have not yet responded. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address the Virtual G20 Summit in November.

It should be noted that Pakistan had recently rejected the new political map of India in which occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir were declared Indian Territory. Pakistan had said that no Indian move could change the disputed status of occupied Jammu and Kashmir as Jammu and Kashmir is a UN-recognized dispute. In addition to the repeal of Articles 370 and 35A of the Constitution to end the special status of Occupied Kashmir on August 5, 2019, the Indian government imposed a curfew in Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, arresting political leaders and activists, mobile and internet services. The suspension has been the subject of constant protests across Pakistan and the Indian government has been strongly condemned. The Indian government formally divided the Occupied Kashmir Valley into two federal units on October 31, 2019, following a controversial move to abolish the special status of Occupied Kashmir (Article 370). Occupied Kashmir has a Muslim majority while Ladakh has a Buddhist majority. Under the new agreement, Jammu and Kashmir will be called a separate unit of 12.2 million people and Ladakh a second unit of 300,000 people, both of which will be directly administered by the federal government in New Delhi.

On the other hand, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR), along with China and Turkey, has also expressed grave concern over human rights violations in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir demanded to be restored. Criticizing the Indian judicial system, the UNHCR said that the petitions filed by the Supreme Court of India regarding freedom of movement and restrictions on the media were being processed slowly. It is to be noted that India has occupied Occupied Jammu and Kashmir for the last 72 years and has taken drastic measures to suppress the growing independence movement during the last 30 years and ended the special status of the Occupied Territories on August 5, 2019. The people of the Occupied Territories are constantly protesting against the Indian atrocities and this issue needs the attention of the international community and after the recent steps it is being discussed and expressed in other international forums including the United Nations.
