China’s parliament has unanimously approved a controversial electoral reform system related to Hong Kong. According to news agencies, all 167 members voted in favor. This is the biggest change in the region’s political system since Hong Kong came under Chinese rule in 1997. This important change comes at a time when China is trying to gain a foothold in the economically strongest region. Under the changes approved by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, the number of directly elected members of the Hong Kong Legislature will now be reduced from 35 to 20, while the number of Assembly seats will increase. It has been increased from 70 to 90. Under the plan, the Chinese Communist Party also has the power to nominate more members of parliament than members elected by the people. This will reduce the number of members elected by the people in the House.

Beijing hopes the law will help establish a patriotic government in Hong Kong. Candidates must first explain their political views in order to run in the election. A report has also been sought from the local police and the city’s new security system, which will allow the candidate to run only after approval. Under this, the number of members of the Election Committee will also be increased from 300 to 1500. The members of the Election Committee are responsible for selecting the Hong Kong Chief Executive and members of the Legislative Assembly. The details of the controversial election reform law, which was introduced by Beijing itself instead of being passed by the Hong Kong Assembly, have not yet been released. These measures are being seen in the context of full control over Hong Kong.
