New head of the Tokyo Games Organizing Committee, Hashimoto Seiko, has decided to leave Japan’s main ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), to demonstrate his political neutrality. Hashimoto Seiko resigned from the party on Friday. The head of the Tokyo Games had earlier said she would not resign from parliament or the LDP. Opposition groups called for a halt to the protests, saying they could use the Olympics to their advantage. However, she told reporters that she would not resign from the upper house. Hashimoto Seiko replaced Mori Yoshiro, the former head of the Tokyo Games, on Thursday. Mori Yoshiro resigned after a strong international response to his statement, which was considered insulting to women.
