Lionel Messi was contested by Liverpool captains Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo for the award. Lionel Messi managed to win the award, while the Liverpool star was second and Cristiano Ronaldo third overall with excellent performance throughout the season. Lionel Messi has been consistently performing well for the past year, scoring 46 goals in 54 matches played in 2019 so far. La Liga scored 36 goals in 34 games and played a central role in making Barcelona a champion last season.
