EU-brokered talks begin to back US withdrawal from global nuclear deal and lift economic sanctions on Iran

Vienna … News Time

Negotiations have begun between the parties, mediated by the European Union, to withdraw the United States from the global nuclear deal and lift economic sanctions on Iran. In addition to the United States and Iran, representatives of Russia, China, Germany, France and the United Kingdom are involved in the negotiations to reach a global nuclear deal, according to the World News Agency. Due to tensions between the two sides, European representatives will meet separately with officials from both countries. It should be noted that in 2015, under former US President Obama, a nuclear deal was signed with Iran, which included world powers. However, later Donald Trump announced his unilateral secession from it in 2018 and imposed sanctions on Iran. According to media reports, the new US administration, showing some flexibility, offered to hold direct talks with Iran, but the Tehran government rejected it, much to the chagrin of the White House. US State Department spokesman Ned Price predicts that the challenges facing the talks are not insignificant. This is an early stage and we do not expect immediate success. Price added that the US position today was that sanctions would be lifted in exchange for a permanent halt to Iran’s nuclear program. Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzada said that negotiations on a nuclear deal may or may not be fruitful, but it would remind European and negotiating countries of the conditions under which the United States must comply.
