As Britain prepares to leave the EU’s economic orbit at the start of the New Year, it has signed a free trade agreement with Turkey. According to the newspaper, the agreement, which will take effect on January 1, aims to boost trade between the two countries, which was worth more than $.25 billion in 2019. The post-Brexit agreement is one of the agreements that the British government wants to make with countries around the world, at a time when the government has finalized a trade agreement with the European Union. The UK seceded from the EU on 31 January this year, but remained under EU business rules until the transition period ended on 31 December.

The agreement was signed by Turkish Minister of Commerce Rushar Pekcan and British Ambassador to Turkey Dominick Chilcott. Rushar Pekcan called the agreement the most important trade agreement for Turkey since the signing of the Customs Union Agreement with the European Union in 1995. Addressing the ceremony, he said that the free trade agreement is a new and special milestone in the relations between Turkey and Britain. It should be noted that the UK is Turkey’s second largest export market.

On the other hand, a statement from the British government said that the agreement would secure existing preferential rates for about 7,600 British businesses exporting goods to Turkey in 2019 and ensure free flow of tariffs on goods. The two countries have said the agreement will lead to a more comprehensive agreement in the future.
