President Mahmoud Abbas shows an order to hold elections

Jerusalem … News Time

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has ordered the holding of phased parliamentary, presidential and national assembly elections this year. According to the presidential decree, all the three elections will be held in phases. According to Palestinian media, the first phase will be parliamentary elections on May 22, 2021. In the second phase, presidential elections will be held on July 31, 2021, while in the third and final phase, members of the National Assembly will be elected on August 31, 2021. The election has been announced by the President by consensus. Mahmoud Abbas was met by the Chairman of the Palestinian Election Commission Hanna Nasir. At the behest of President Abbas, all political parties in Palestine have been instructed to launch election campaigns in the West Bank and Gaza. Occupied Jerusalem will also be included in the election campaign.

It should be noted that after the occupation of East Jerusalem during the 6-day Arab-Israeli war of 1967, Israel unjustifiably declared it its part, however, the international community did not recognize this forced annexation and it is still considered an occupied territory. It should be noted that after almost a decade and a half, the Palestinian people will use their right to vote to elect a new parliament and president. It is unclear whether Mahmoud Abbas, 85, will run again. According to a poll last year, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was ahead of Mahmoud Abbas. Over the past few years, general elections in the Palestinian territories have been planned several times, but no final presidential decree has been signed.
