Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to take part in the joint economic activity on 4 Islands organized by the Russian Federation. Japan claims to own the island. The Japanese government’s stand is that it is a landmark part of the Japanese island of 4 Islands, and was captured illegally after World War II.

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Putin agreed on joint economic activity as a progress towards regional conflict resolution in December 2016. The two countries have already agreed on 5 priority projects including water and greenhouse farming. In the ongoing negotiations, Shinzo Abe is expected to negotiate on the issue of marine back farming and straw harvesting under the initial projects. Japan wants a contract under which he could send a research team to the island in the summer, which could take initial reviews about these projects and communicate with them with high government officials.
