Japan and South Korea have failed to break a bilateral agreement on intelligence sharing. Japan and South Korea’s defense ministers Taro Kono and Jeong Kyeong-doo met separately on Sunday at a regional forum in Bangkok. The meeting focused on G-Somia, which expires November 23. And South Korea has decided not to renew it in the context of worsening bilateral relations due to war and trade disputes. Taro Kono said the security environment in East Asia was tense due to North Korea’s repeated ballistic missile tests. That cooperation between the two countries and the United States is inevitable, not only between Japan and South Korea. He called on South Korea to behave wisely about G-Somia. Jeong Kyeong-doo hopes the bitterness in bilateral relations is regrettable on many issues he and Taro Kono will work together to promote bilateral relations and defense cooperation. He, however, reiterated South Korea’s stance on a confidentiality sharing agreement.
